Practice Habits
* Always practice with a METRONOME(http://www.metronomeonline.com)
* Check intonation with a tuner or piano
* Brass Players - make sure to buzz each exercise before playing
1. Breathing Exercises - increase breath support
2. Long Tones - quarter note = 60 - 72 beats per minute
3. Flexibility - Warm-Up Sets 1 - 4 (Foundations Book)
4. Finger/Articulation Exercises (Foundations Book)
- Scale Patterns, 3rds, Intervals, Arpeggios
* Be sure to develop a fast single tongue that is clear before working on multiple tonguing. (Single tongue 16th notes at quarter note = 110)
5. Multiple Tonguing (Brass and Flutes Only!)
- Double Tongue = TaKa for Flutes and DaGa for Brass
- Triple Tongue = TTK or TKT
6. Scales - major, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, chromatic, 2 octaves /range extension
Rest 15 minutes after working on range extension
7. Lyrical Playing - Chorales and melodies
8. Prepared Music - Etudes, Concert Music, Solo and Ensemble
** Warm Down with Long Tones after long practice sessions
9. Private Lessons are a great way to improve on your instrument and make you a stronger addition to the ensemble.
The "Three T's" are the important aspects to consider when practicing.
Are you playing......
1. In TONE (quality tone for your instrument)
2. In TIME (practice with a metronome)
3. In TUNE (check pitch with a tuner or piano)
If you are not playing "in TONE," you will never sound "in TUNE."
